Canadian Politics In A Nutshell

There are four main political parties in Canada.
I'm generalizing, but traditionally:

The Conservatives
look out for big corporations, people in higher tax brackets, keeping the economy their first priority - usually at the expense of the environment and social programs. They tend to support American laws, policies and wars. They oppose liberal issues like gay marriage, abortion. The current Conservative government is thought to have skirted around many of the campaign promises that got them elected.
Leader - Stephen Harper

The Liberals
do pretty much the same thing with big business and the economy, but at least pretend to be interested in the middle class, social and environmental issues. They also tend to be less supportive of military involvement.
NDP-type thinkers generally vote for them when they don't like the Conservatives, but they think the NDPs can't win in their riding. They have recently developed a reputation for being dishonest fat-cats.
Leader - Stephane Dion

The NDPs
put the environment, family, education, health care and social programs higher on their priorities, although the current NDP party has some interesting ideas about manufacturing and the economy. Most voters don't trust them with the economy.
They are often thought to be soft on crime, heavy on hand-outs.
Leader - Jack Layton

The Green Party
started out focusing mainly on the environment. Now that the other parties have jumped on that bandwagon they have comparable platforms on all issues. They are inexperienced, don't have a well known leader, and are thought of as a single issue party by most voters, so it will be a while before they are a real contender.
Leader - Elizabeth May

Do your own research and get to know each party's platforms on the key issues.

ECONOMY - ENVIRONMENT - FAMILY - HEALTH CARE - AFGHANISTAN - etc.

It's very important to research and consider your local rep's policies and ability to represent you.

Vote for the local rep/party you like, not against the party you don't like.

Hope that makes sense and helps someone.
